Cat 2-1-2 spread

1
(Based on Hoop Tactics)
Use against a defence that traps. Move the ball.
Option - put 4 on the side of the weakest defensive rebounder, attack the side with the strongest defensive rebounder.
5 is a key position, need a triple-threat player. When the ball goes into the post, the baseline players backcut towards the basket (option - cross if there is no pass).
The post should receive the ball with inside foot forward (not back to the basket).

2
When the ball is passed to a baseline corner, the post rolls to the basket, and relocates back to the high post if no pass is made.

3
Variation - on a pass to the corner, the high post and weakside corner interchange (a 2-2-1 entry can be used then)

4
When in trouble, look to pass to the opposite corner (which will always be open against a 1-3-1).

5
Other options against a 1-3-1:
(a) Basescreen - on ball reversal, 4 screens for shooter 3 to run to the ballside corner. If the low defender cheats early over the screen to guard 3, 4 steps towards the ball (see Atkins Oregon).
4 always has weakside rebounding position. Look for a lob pass to 4. 4 can move out to the weakside corner for a diagonal skip pass to relieve pressure on 1 or 2.
Attack the side with the weakest rotations. Look for quick ball reversal or a skip pass out of the corner if the weakside wing drops down to the baseline.

5 rolls to the basket on a pass to 3.
If the defence traps in the corner, an option is that 5 goes to the low post and 4 cuts to the high post for a 4-player overload (see Atkins baseline).

7
Variation - 4 and 5 exchange on a pass to 3 (option - if 3 is double-teamed, 5 goes to the ballside low post).
A 2-2-1 entry can be used if 4 and 5 are interchangeable.

8
Another option is that 3 can stay in the corner on ball reversal, looking for a diagonal skip pass. 4 does not change sides either, and looks for the ball.

9
(b) 4 is always ballside, and screens for 3 to run to the weakside corner on ball reversal (poorer weakside rebounding, but there is a diagonal skip pass to a shooter).

(c) Put the best shooters in the corners of the basic Cat spread attack.
