1
Initially have stationary attackers, no skip passes, and attackers hold the ball for 1 or 2 seconds before passing. As attackers pass around the perimeter, defenders jump with the ball into proper on-ball, deny and help positions (be there on the catch), use a quick crossover step then sprint to your spot.
Progressions
- dribble penetration and pitch (help and recover, help the helper)
- skip passes
- give and go
- ball cuts
- backdoor cuts
- off-ball screens
- ball screens
- post defence
- trapping
- box out on shots (limit dribbles).
Variations
- 5 on 5
- on coach's signal, defenders rotate one attacker clockwise or counterclockwise
- go live after 3 or 4 passes
- can't shoot until after X passes.

Defensive options
1) One pass away from the ball
- deny (up and on the line)
- gap (up and off the line)
- deny a penetrating pass, otherwise gap
- deny one step past the 3-point line, gap beyond that
- deny perimeter passes right, gap left
- don't deny the pass back to a passer, gap
- full help and recovery on dribble penetration, bluff and recover, or stay at home (no ballside kick-out passes for open shots).
2) Two passes away
- straddle the splitline
- one foot in the lane when the ball is above the foul line, both feet in the lane when the ball is below
- both feet weakside when the ball is above the foul line, both feet ballside when the ball is below.

An unbalanced shell drill can be used to work on defending forwards or guards. The attackers without defenders cannot shoot (option - or dribble).
Examples (Coach K)
- 5 on 2 with defenders only on the posts
- 5 on 3 with defenders only on the perimeter players
- 5 on 4, coach determines which player does not have a defender
- 5 on 5 but only one or some attackers can score, defenders do not know who they are.
