1-2-2 slider

1
The 1-2-2 slider zone can be used to pressure the ball outside, and is effective against a good outside shooting team.
Slider (superman) X1 plays between the ball and the basket. He is the best perimeter defender, and should be tall enough to cover the low post.
X1 must get the ball out of the middle (force weak-hand), as the high post is vulnerable when the ball is out top.
Because most offences are right-handed, X3 is usually the second-best perimeter defender, and X5 will have to cover perimeter players (the corner) more often than X4, who should be the better rebounder and inside/high-post defender.
Jack Bennett - all five defenders cover the perimeter.

One defender pressures the ball, the other four protect the paint. Other keys are:
- deny dribble and pass penetration, but not non-penetrating passes
- give help but contest every shot, no layups, no 2nd shots
- call the cutters, force them behind
- with an attacker in your area of the zone, triangle ball-you-man (the farther the attacker is from the ball, the flatter your triangle)
- stay in a help position, parallel to the passing line
- if there is no attacker in your area, protect the basket or look to help a teammate
- front or 3/4 low and high post attackers
- close-out with inside hand high, other hand below the knee (knees bent).
X3 takes the ball on the wing, the other defenders triangle attackers in their areas. X1 drops to the ballside elbow area, X5 covers the low post, does not deny a pass to the corner.
Jack Bennett - X5 dead fronts or 3/4's a low post, X2 and X4 have a foot in the lane with vision, X1 is parallel to the ball. On a pass into the low post from the wing there is a natural double team by X1 and X5.

When the ball is in the corner, X5 gets out on the ball (and therefore can't play behind a low post attacker), slider X1 drops down to front a low post, X4 covers weakside low. X3 covers the ballside high post, he does not deny a pass out of the corner. X4 covers the ballside low post temporarily if X1 is unable to get in position quickly enough.
X5 will close out up to about the level of the dots. If in doubt, he may stunt, and recover when X3 closes out.
If the ball is passed into the low post, X5 double teams with X1 (an automatic dig with the defender of the passer). If 5 skip passes to 1, X1 can't get there in time, so X3 closes out, and X1 takes his place (Jack Bennett - X2 takes 1 until bumped by X1, if 1 passes to 3, X4 takes him until X2 bumps X4 back down).
With a conventional 1-2-2, X4 covers the low post, X1 the elbow, and X2 drops down for weakside rebounding. X5 and X4 are on a string.

Trapping the corners
Trapping the corners with the ballside wing is an option. X1 covers the low post, X2 the elbow, and X4 protects weakside. More aggressively, X2 could deny a pass out to the ballside wing, and X4 cover the elbow.
On a pass out of the trap to 2, X2 closes out, and will switch positions with X3 in the zone. On a pass to 1, X2 closes out and switches with X1.
Consider trapping only the defensive left corner, where an attacker would have to dribble out with his left hand. After the first trap opposing coaches may tell their players to keep the ball out of both corners (see the Pistons 1-2-2 match-up).

1-3-1 set
One option against a 1-3-1 set is to bring up the back defender who does not have an attacker in his area (if the offence uses a 1-4 set, bring up both low defenders). See the Pistons 1-2-2 match-up zone.

On a pass to 2, X3 closes out, X1 drops down. When 5 and 4 x-cut, and X5 and X4 cut with them. X1 is the "jam" guy, open to the ball with his left hand in the passing lane to 4, but he can't get pinned by 4 on a skip pass (Pistons match-up). X2 triangles 3.

Alternatively cover the high post with X2 or X3 when the ball is out front, but then it's 4 on 3 at the top.

With the ball on the wing, X1 would drop down to the ballside elbow area and cover the high-post attacker. X4 does not have an attacker in his area.
See the St. Joseph 1-2-2.

On a pass back to the point, X3 covers the high post, which leaves X2 to defend 3 on ball reversal (see Syracuse 2-3 zone).
Variations
- weakside wing X2 takes the high post (coachesclipboard.net)
- X1 stays with the high post, X3 takes the ball (St. Joseph 1-2-2).

4-man overloads
1 has passed to 2 and cut to the ballside (or weakside) corner. On ball reversal, 1 runs the baseline, 4 and 5 x-cut.
With the ball on the wing, X1 covers the high post, X5 has the low post, X2 triangles 3. X4 has no attacker in his area, and looks to help on 5, especially with 1 in the ballside corner.
In the Pistons 1-2-2 match-up, X4 would take 5 and X5 take 1.
In the Auburn 1-2-2 match-up, X4 would be between the ball and the basket, X5 halfway to the ballside corner parallel to the baseline, and X2 in line with the ball and the far corner, both feet in the lane.

If 3 drops to the weakside corner, X2 has no attacker in his area, and can help X4 and protect the basket by sagging to cover 3. X4 can continue looking to help on 5.
Pistons match-up - X2 takes 3.
Auburn match-up - X2 is again in line with the ball and the far corner.
St. Joseph - X2 closes out on a skip pass to 3, X4 takes the new ballside low post, X1 takes the elbow.

Ball in the corner.
When the other team shoots, the defence wants to create a rebounding triangle with three defenders to control the boards, making contact and creating a buffer.
When X1 is fronting O5, X1 will spin and seal on a shot. However, if X4 needs to box out 5, weakside wing X2 slides down to cover weakside low. Optionally the weakside wing always covers weakside low, or helps on 5.

Defensive positions would be the same with the Pistons match-up.
In the Auburn match-up, X4 would be between the fall and the basket, X5 halfway to the ballside corner, and X2 in line with the ball and the far corner.

Because X1 covers the high post, when 4 and 5 x-cut on ball reversal, X4 and X5 do not cut with them.
